I have a house built in 1949 and there is an outlet over the doorway in the kitchen. I"ve seen these in other houses as well. What is the intended use for these outlets? I was thinking clock but it’s recessed into the wall and it would have to be a very very small clock to fit between the ceiling and the door jam.
I haven’t seen those before, but could it have originally been for a hardwired smoke detector, or did older smoke detectors plug into outlets like the CO detectors do now? You could be right about the clock, too. Things weren’t so "supersized" in the 1940′s!

For me, it’s a Snoopy & Gang clock hanging on my kitchen wall…it plays the "Lucy & Linus" song at the top of the hour…and for no particular reason…even when I am in a crabby (Lucy) mood, it makes me smile!

in a tv show i remember, there was the kitty cat clock on the wall of the kitchen. it showed it a lot and it really seemed creepy. please help me think of the show it was in!
If I remember right it was Dexter’s Lab with the clock that had the eyes that looked back and forth and the tail that swayed
