I think reason is that, as times flies, everything includes fashion, experience, cultural values etc are ongoing & ever changing.
Human beings prefer to buy things that are expensive because they assume that it is worth for it maybe in indirect way , Example: for the clock that sold $1000 , people will think that it represent prestigious, sense of wealth, wanna be outstanding than others, act as a decoration cum clock etc

Humans beings always have a perception and that is to be different from others or maybe trying to be better .
Its normal to buy things that others won't buy usually.
This is one of the psychological warfare tactics

Salesman have lots of techniques, a lot of workers in society are actually salesman, one way to recognized them anyone one who is attending to your enquires or assistance. They are actually the bane SALESMAN.
Don't be fool by them, example a private school hires some educational consultants which may seems so professionals helping students , giving them advice on which course to take
up, but in fact , they are salesman in disgust. Those that are not ,hardly won;t have the chance to get any contact with u.
THey have lots of tactics, its too many, but one way to make yourself worth it is that before u make any buying decisions, thinking whether u will regret it in the future .If not its okay
References :
you ask two questions.
Let me address the antique clock. That's why people buy that, because it's antique and increases in value as the years pass, plus it's probably made out of wood which makes it more valuable.

People fall for salesman techniques for many reasons: because they know the salesman, because they need or want the product, sometimes because of how the salesman looks to them, maybe because the salesman has tricks up his sleeve that make the product sound better than it really is, because the salesman makes promises (sometimes that he can keep, sometimes not, for instance an extended guarantee on the product for free), maybe because the price is too good (and becomes too good to be true), could be because they heard their neighbor just purchased one of those products, etc.
