play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I totally understand why you wouldn't want to do a boring builder's beige. But take a look at a color called "gourd" (# 7159) from their SoftSuede faux finish collection. It's actually in the yellow family, but muted & the suede texture will give it a unique sophistication.

You can also take a photo of your room & upload it to the makeover gallery on Roomvues dot com:

You can get color suggestions & they'll photoshop them onto your room so that you can get an idea of what it will look like.
References :
I'd go with an earth tone, a medium brown may look OK. But get some poster paper of different colors and hang them up one or two at a time and see if these colors coordinate with existing colors. One good thing about any paint job...it can always be repainted. Have fun with it!...
References :
I would stay away from a dark color - I've heard that white sells the best, but that's kinda boring. I would go with a really light purple or grey... probably leaning more towards grey. If you are planning on reselling soon, go with something more conservative.
References :
Gold and purple will look good together ,you will have the colours of Tuscany . The Pink will eventually blend in with the purple since it's from the same colour wheel
References :
I would go pale. A nice light yellow would be nice but that is my opinion only. The rest of the house would go pale also.
